The Agriculture and Biotechnology Research Center aims to carry out basic theoretical research and technical development on molecular analysis and genetic improvement of featured agricultural plants in South China, and to promote germplasm innovation and breeding that meet the regional demands in South China. Our studies connect basic research and molecular breeding with application and extension, impelling a healthy development of intelligent agriculture in South China.
The director of the center is Prof. HOU Xingliang, and the deputy directors are Prof. YANG Ziyin, DUAN Xuewu, and YANG Bao. At present, the laboratory has 77 researchers, including 27 professors, 30 associate professors, 16 assistant professors, 2 senior engineers, 1 engineer, and 1 technician. Over the past year, one researcher was awarded Excellent Young Scientist Scheme (Overseas) by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, one researcher received the award of Young Talent Development Fund from Dean of Guangzhou Branch, the CAS，one team was elected as the member of Forestry and Grassland Science and Technology Innovation Team in National Forestry and Grassland Administration. There are 25 post-doctors, 60 enrolled doctoral students, and 118 enrolled master students. 22 PhD students and 37 Ms students graduated in 2023.
In 2023, the key laboratory obtained 69 scientific research projects with the funds of 75.51 million Yuan (RMB) in total. Among these projects, 11 projects were from Ministry of Science and Technology or National Natural Science Foundation of China, 7 projects from CAS, 36 grants from local government of Guangdong province, and 15 grants from other sources.131 papers had been published in SCI journals (48, 20 and 36 of the papers were published in the journals of the top 10%, with an impact factor> 10, and with an impact factor> 7, respectively ). In addition, the laboratory obtained 46 national invention patents, 9 were approved as National or Provincial new varieties, 20 evaluation of new varieties, 22 new international varieties, as well as 4 prizes of science and technology.Our lab developed 4 industry technical standard, 2 published monographs，and 11 software copyrights.
