Now, BD's first article is officially online! Volume 1, Issue 1 will be published at the end of March 2024!
The first article is “Inaugural editorial: Biological Diversity”, written by eminent scientist Hai Ren, highlights the critical importance of addressing the pressing environmental issues facing our planet. As the world's population surpasses eight billion, the delicate balance between humans and ecosystems is becoming increasingly strained, leading to significant ecosystem degradation, biodiversity loss, climate change, and pollution. Ren highlights alarming statistics from the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) that point to widespread habitat destruction, species extinction, and the declining vitality of the Earth.
"Biodiversity", as defined by Ren, encompasses the rich tapestry of life on Earth, including genetic diversity within species, species diversity, and ecosystem diversity. In recognition of its multifaceted importance, biodiversity is not only a scientific concern but also a political, economic, and social imperative. The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), signed in 1992, sets forth ambitious goals to conserve biodiversity, promote the sustainable use of its components and ensure the equitable sharing of genetic resources.
The recent 15th Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to the CBD culminated in the Kunming-Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework, which outlines a comprehensive strategy for conservation efforts from 2021 to 2030. Emphasizing flexibility, transformation, and a shift towards eco-centric approaches, the framework aims to reconcile nature conservation with social development, paving the way for a harmonious coexistence between people and the nature.
Ren also reported that scientific research is the foundation of biodiversity conservation, providing insights into its origins, evolution, and ecological dynamics. The launch of Biological Diversity coincides with a burgeoning interest in biodiversity research, as evidenced by a surge in scientific publications exploring various facets of biodiversity—from genetic studies to ecosystem interactions.
As emphasized in the inauguration, Biological Diversity aims to provide a platform for interdisciplinary discourse on biodiversity science. By publishing high quality research, reviews, and perspectives in an open access format, promoting collaboration and knowledge exchange between researchers and practitioners worldwide. With the support of the global biodiversity community, Biological Diversity strives to be the flagship journal for advancing the field of biodiversity research.
